One interesting way to think about applying the exchange model is to analyze interactions and relationships we have experienced. Using the theoretical insights of at least two theorists try to develop an exchange theoretical account of at least two different interactions relationships you have experienced (or know of someone else who experienced them). First, try to use the theories to explain “what went right?” in the interaction/relationship, leading to positive emotions and stability in the encounter. Second, analyze anything that “went wrong,” leading to negative emotions and relational instability. Try to push the analysis as far as the theoretical insights lead you. If you find that you uncover things that you’d rather not share, please feel free to leave them out of the analysis.
