NRS-420 Topic 2 Developmental Assessment Case Study
Age Group 12 to 18: Adolescents
Scenario:
Cheyenne is a 15-year-old Native American/Caucasian female who lives in a small, rural town. Cheyenne’s mother,
who was Native American, committed suicide when Cheyenne was 14 years old. Cheyenne has two younger sisters
that are thirteen and ten years of age. Cheyenne’s father is a logger who works as an independent contractor. He
tends to work long hours, and most days of the week when the weather is conducive for logging. Cheyenne is
expected to watch over her sisters and take care of things while her father is working. The family is not religious
and has no relatives or social connections in the community. Cheyenne is in the 10 th grade; she is not active in any
extracurricular activities. She has not dated or had a boyfriend. She has two close friends but tends to be shy
around groups or other people she does not know. She would like to fit in better with her peers. Cheyenne is making
low Cs in most of her classes. She has little interest in school and does not have any future aspirations for a career.
Cheyenne is overweight with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 32 and has struggled with acne since going through
puberty.
Department of Health Services (DHS) was contacted when a teacher reported that Cheyenne had bruises that were
evident when she dressed for her required Physical Education class. After interviewing both Cheyenne and her
father, DHS found out that Cheyenne took her two younger siblings to a party while he was working late, and all
three siblings drank alcohol and got intoxicated. Cheyenne’s father punished Cheyenne by spanking her with his
belt across her back, buttocks, and thighs when he came home and found out what happened. He regrets having
reacted in anger. DHS is working to put together a safety plan for the family.
