YU Green Roofing as a Solution Case Study – Description

PurposeThe purpose of this memo is to discuss the environmental issues that plague urban areas and to provide a possible solution that SJSU can implement to help improve current conditions. This memo will discuss the environmental problems common to urban areas such as San Jose. These will include air quality, heat islands and high temperatures, and stormwater run-off. The solution our team will be presenting is the use of green roofs on SJSU buildings. Introduction Our team at Green Roofs for Urbanites (G.R.U) is committed to educating people about the benefits of green roofs, and the benefits they provide to our environment with an emphasis in urban areas. Our company hopes to spread our message to all cities across the continental United States. Our goal here at G.R.U is to see cities implement green roofs on their own buildings, improving air quality and other environmental issues for those who call these urban areas their home. Our company offers unique environmental consulting with an emphasis on green roofs. Our team ensures that our clients understand the importance of the environment and explains how green roofs not only solves problems, but also provides a host of added benefits. From education to the type of soil to be used, our team at G.R.U does it all! Discussion Urban areas face a variety of environmental challenges. The most urban-specific problem is known as the urban heat island effect. The urban heat island effect is defined as the fact that urban areas tend to consistently have higher temperatures than their surrounding counterparts. This is usually due to human activities, lack of green space, dark-colored buildings and albedo, and greenhouse gas emissions from traffic. San Jose State University is located in the heart of downtown San Jose. SJSU has already made substantial efforts to reduce the university’s ecological footprint. However, we here at G.R.U believe we can make an additional contribution that will reduce that footprint even further. I am of course talking about green roofs. Green roofs refer to a roof of a building that is partially or completely covered with vegetation. Basic green roofs require a waterproof roof, a few inches of soil, along with vegetation. Implementing green roofs on SJSU buildings is something that will be discussed in further detail in the proposal, but G.R.U is aware of the benefits they will bring to the campus and the city. Green roofs will help stormwater management, can reduce electrical costs due to their natural insulation, encourage biodiversity, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, lower air temperatures and help mitigate the urban heat island effect. We believe that our team at G.R.U is the best team for the job. Implementing green roofs is quite literally our specialty. G.R.U has been the best in the business for over a decade, with hundreds of raving reviews to back that up. Years of experience and the most knowledgeable personnel have helped G.R.U become what it is today.
