writing task – Description

Choose ONE of the essay topics below and write a formal scholarly essay in response. Word length for this essay is 1500 words, not including references (+/- 10% of 1500 does not attract penalty). You must engage with at least TWO peer-reviewed scholarly essays published in literary journals as references for your essay. The primary journals for Australian Literature are: JASAL (Journal of the Association for the Study of Australian Literature), ALS (Australian Literary Studies). Others include Southerly, Meanjin, Westerly, Overland. These are all available online via UNSW library. A useful database for Australian Literature is Austlit, which you can access through UNSW library. (NB Austlit does include non-peer-reviewed material so you still need to check the journal masthead for statements about peer-reviewing.) The MLA International Bibliography is another useful database for literary studies including Australian Literature. You must use a Humanities referencing style (not APA) eg MLA, Chicago, Harvard. You must also make use of careful close reading of the selected texts to support and extend your analysis.
Question: How do the short stories by Alf Taylor, and the oral narrative/transcribed story ‘Mirdinan’ by Paddy Roe, represent relationships between Indigenous individuals and communities and persisting colonial structures in Australia?
