This is week’s discussion is about Confucianism.
Review of the Superior Man in Confucianism
“The gentleman, according to Confucius is simply a man of virtue. Confucius’s teachings explained the characteristics of a gentleman as a superior man, a man at his best, and a portrayer of authentic manhood. Meaning is added to the relationship between human beings referred to as Jen [human heartedness, goodness] by Confucius by incorporating the idealness of the terms of human relationships (Chun-Tzu, Junzi) [A Chun-Tzu, also spelled Junzi, is an ideal man in society]. Confucius states that there are five major characteristics that make up a true gentleman which are humility, sincerity, graciousness, magnanimity, and diligence” (Singleton, Andy). The Ideal Person
Part Two
Please note that you are required to have the books to complete this homework, as I cannot give you all the readings for the course. I don’t have the book for this class but I will give you the name of the book and I hope you will have it or try to find it and this is the information about the textbooks.
The two books are Huston Smith’s The Worlds Religions, and Jacob Neusner’s World Religions in America fourth edition.
You may use any edition of Huston Smith’s book. There is an edition with a blue cover from the 1980s, an edition with a white cover, and there is an edition with a red/orange cover. Any will do. I just looked on Amazon, and it is available for about 4 dollars plus four dollars shipping. (I couldn’t find a free pdf version. Sorry.)
You should plan on using the fourth edition of World Religions in America by Neusner. It is pretty cheap too at about 3 dollars and there is a Kindle version. Smith also has a Kindle version.
