Week 1
Explain how you expect this course will help you move forward in your current or future career.
Using current events (for example, local, state, or federal oversight of business enterprise and personal freedoms), discuss if there can be too much public policy in place. Can government overextend and intrude into our personal freedoms? Is it worth the benefits? Argue your viewpoint with examples.

Good morning Professor Smith and Classmates My name is Latoya and I turned 30 this year. One unique thing about me is I read to handle my anxiety. I think this class will help me in understanding the importance of each step in the policy making process. This will help me with either working in the public or private sector. In my honest opinion I am on the fence about this issue. On one hand there are times when it may seem there may be too many policies in place; and they are designed to stump individuals needing help. On the other hand there are times when it seems to be a lack of policy in place. Examples include political parties. The saying perception is reality is especially true in this case. While looking this up I saw some classic finger pointing from both democrats and republicans. I do believe that the government can over extend into our personal freedoms. To me it’s not worth the benefits. For me it’s the equivalent of fruit from the poisonous tree. The unnecessary tactics used only cause bigger issues in the long run. For instance let’s just say that there is a policy against something that is vital to keep a business whether big or small from reaching a one percent success rate; how are business owners going to flip the situation around to benefit them. ( I really hope that makes sense.) Week 2
Define a policy argument or claim that is specific and evaluative. Topics may include crime, global warming, unemployment, whistleblowing, and others. Discuss the benefits of structuring arguments before and while developing written documents.
Week 3
Provide a real public policy issue (local, state, or national) and select an appropriate criterion for policy prescription to use in deciding the policy’s effectiveness, efficiency, and adequacy. Provide some reasons why you selected the criterion (such as importance, application, or relevancy).
Assignment
You have been tasked to present at a town hall meeting in your local town or city to present the details about a new local policy that is being proposed. The presentation will need to define the problem, proposed solutions, risks, challenges, and funding opportunities/challenges. Topics may include local government changes to communities (for example, transportation, commercial enterprise effects on nearby townships, affordable housing construction, environmental effects of new/old business operations, addressing homelessness support, and others).
