WCU Southeast Asia Natural Disasters and Climate Change Paper – Description
You will identify a health disparity that disproportionately affects a population in the developing world AND impacts the health, security, economics, and/or politics of other nations, explore the issue from various viewpoints, and present your findings in a 3-5 page paper.
As an example, I suggest you view the short TED Talk, The Jungle Search for Viruses (8A). This talk introduces the complex interactions between poverty, exposure to new viral diseases, and the risk of new viral pandemics
Successful completion of this assignment will meet the Liberal Studies objective for Critical Thinking, Outcome #3: “Students will evaluate evidence, context, and multiple perspectives as a means of analyzing complex issues.”
Step 1: Choose a topic. This will require some independent research. You are strongly encouraged to email the instructor with your topic for suggestions.
Examples of Possible Topics: several web links are provided in Module 3 (8A, 8B, 8C) to help you begin to identify.
Examples of suitable topics include, but are not limited to:
Food Insecurity and Health
Human Migration and Health
Environmental Exposures and Health
Access to Health Care Systems
Natural Disasters and Climate Change
Mental Health and Wellness in Developing Nations
Civil Unrest/Conflict and Health
Step 2. After you choose a topic, conduct research to learn more about the issue. The website usa.gov is a good place to begin, and the Health and Human Sciences Research Guide (8E) offered by Hunter Library is another good research tool.
Step 3. Discuss your topic in a written paper.
The contents of your paper may vary depending on the topic you choose, but you will likely address the following points:
Introduction: briefly introduce your topic
What factors promote the health disparity?
Why is the topic important from a Public Health perspective?
How may the disparity impact global health, security, economics, or politics?
Body

Global Impacts

What Public Health interventions are needed to address the health disparity?
What role may other nations play in addressing the health disparity?
What disagreements exist concerning how to address the health disparity, who should be responsible for Public Health interventions, etc.? What factors drive those disagreements (economic considerations, racism, etc.)?
Conclusion
Discuss your predictions for how the health disparity may be resolved in the future
What additional information needs to be gathered to make informed decisions?
How could those with opposing viewpoints come to agreement?
How do you think the health disparity will progress?
