Was the early United States an empire? That is the question and perhaps an uncomfortable one as we apply the negative connotation of empires to the United States. It makes us grapple with some of the harsh realities of history. That is part of what history is though. We engage harsh realities and truths. Use and cite examples from any of the class materials we have covered up until this point to support your argument one way or the other. Materials from the founding of the United States until this week’s lecture can be used.
