University of Winnipeg CLAS- 2701 Choosing either Ovid Heroides 1 or 3, students will discuss the representations of Penelope or Briseis. – Description
Choosing one of Ovid’s Heroides 1 or 3, students will produce an essay discussing Ovid’s adaptations of Homer’s Iliad or Odyssey. Your essay will not be a summary of the poems, but instead it will discuss 2-3 elements that have been adapted, added, and/or changed by Ovid, as well as the effects of these adaptations. The effect can include the purpose of any choices or changes made by Ovid in his narratives (how does it change the story?), the representation of characters (how are Penelope or Briseis altered from Homer?), and/or the response in the reader (how does a change make you feel?). For example, students considering Ovid’s Heroides 3 could consider the focus on Briseis’ identity as a non-Greek via her discussion of her language skills, and the way this thus suggests that her words are not carefully constructed but formed by honest emotional outpouring. You are required to engage with both Ovid’s Heroides and either Homer’s Iliad or Odyssey. Secondary sources may also be used, but they must supplement primary sources. Your assignment will be in essay format and will be 1200-1500 words in length (not including title page and bibliography). Your paper must be fully cited, including correct primary source citations, APA citation style and include page numbers in your footnotes/in-text citations for secondary sources. Students will be marked equally on their comparisons of Ovid’s Heroides and Homer’s texts and the effects of any changes/adaptations that Ovid makes in his work, with 1/5 weighted towards proper formatting (written in essay format) and correct/consistent citations.
