Understanding Workplace Stress Discussion – Description

Reply to each post with 1-2 paragraphs including referencesPost#1- Anh Occupation and culture can bring many psychosocial stressors to middle-aged adults. Factors causing stress from the workplace vary depending on the demands of the job. Some jobs demand long-working hours, working overtime, heavy workload, and high responsibilities. Excessive workload with tight deadlines can put people constantly under pressure and negatively affect the quality of life. When the job is strenuous and people often rush for time to complete the tasks, they will feel anxious and stressed. Demanding occupations can challenge the work-life balance. Conflicts between duties at work versus family responsibilities can also create stressors for adults. Occupational stressors can cause diseases such as depression and cardiovascular-related diseases such as hypertension (Rajoo et al., 2020). Beside workplace stress, culture factors such as social expectation, gender roles, and social support also cause psychosocial stressors for middle-aged adults. Cultural expectations about familial, financial, and social responsibilities can contribute to stress of middle-aged adults. A lack of resources and a supportive social system can increase the level of stress. Moreover, women can have more stressors than men regarding the fulfillment of both job and family responsibilities. These stressors can lead to mental and physical harms. Chronic stress is associated to heart disease, lung ailments, cancer, accidents, liver cirrhosis , and suicide (Rajoo et al., 2020). Nursing for me is rewarding overall, but there are still some stressors that I encounter at the workplace. Understaffing with unsafe nurse-to-patient ratios often makes me nervous and puts me under pressure to manage the increased workload while maintaining the standard of care. Furthermore, demanding paperwork and charting can add to the stress levels of the job. The profession of nursing requires high responsibilities and liabilities to make sure patients get adequate and safe care. Besides direct patient care and nursing interventions, I need to complete extensive documentation and paperwork. Charting can be time-consuming, especially when patients have changes in conditions. Post#2 – ChristianaMany middle-aged adults take pride in their occupation and their success. The middle-aged adults make up most of the American workforce currently (Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). Some psychosocial stressors that occur in the workplace is workplace violence, workplace injuries, and workplace exposure to hazardous materials. These events can cause a disruption to social status. One’s culture can influence psychosocial stressors because culture can determine self-perception and success to an individual (Edelman & Kudzma, 2021). Culture can set expectations for an individual and if one doesn’t live up to the standard, then it will lead to psychosocial stressors and impact daily activities. As a travel ICU nurse my occupation imposes a lot of stress. With the staffing crisis, I feel obligated to show up to work for overtime because I know those in my community need me. I also feel guilty because I feel there is a lack of balance in my workplace and social life. As a young adult, it can be challenging to manage work, school, and family.
