Understanding & Conducting Comprehensive Analyses Discussion Reply – Description

Module File 1 data appears to be data on length, weight, and DDT for three species of fish, including largemouth bass, channel catfish, and smallmouth buffalo. The data could be studying the level of fish tissue contaminants using DDT as a dependent variable, but there is not enough information to confirm. Nonetheless, there are four variables of species, length, weight, and DDT. Species is a nominal measure, and length, weight, and DDT were updated to ordinal measures.

The total sample size was 18. There was an equal distribution of samples between the groups of fish. In other words, there was a count of six for the bass, catfish, and buffalo. Three fish had the same length of 41, while two had 44. None of the fish weighed the same. Two fish had a DDT value of 13.00, while two had 21.00, and the rest had all unique values. Length, weight, and DDT did not have a normal distribution. If the sample size increases, the likelihood of the data plotting on a normal distribution curve will increase (McClave et al., 2021).

Out of curiosity, box-and-whisker plots were created. The largemouth bass had the shortest length, lowest weight, and smallest amounts of DDT compared to the channel catfish and smallmouth buffalo. The smallmouth buffalo had the highest length and weight but did not have the highest level of DDT. The channel catfish had the broadest range of DDT compared to the bass and buffalo.

The descriptive statistics for the entire sample provided interesting results. The median is more than the mean for the length, so the data is skewed to the left on the bar graph (McClave et al., 2021). The skew in length is also visualized as a negative value in the descriptive statistics. Since the skew is not zero and is a positive value for DDT, and the median is less than the mean, the data is skewed to the right on the bar graph for DDT. The skew is positive for weight, but the median is less than the mean for weight, and this variable is almost on a normal distribution. Length, weight, and DDT all have negative values for kurtosis, meaning they have a flat peak of their curve on a graph.

It is unclear what the research question is. However, the data analysis could benefit from a few calculations. There could be an analysis of variance, as there are multiple groups in the independent variable of fish species (Bougie & Sekaran, 2020). Or perhaps a multiple regression provided the independent variables are species, length, and width, and the dependent variable is DDT, for example (Bougie & Sekaran, 2020). Nonetheless, the data is useful to practice using SPSS.
