Being an ethical leader is more than having solid values; leaders set the tone for an organizational culture through shared values, attitudes, and ethical practices. It does not matter what position the employee holds or their pay grade in a company. These traits can and should be encouraged at all levels of employment. Every employee is a leader to someone, and each can echo the ethical principles the company wishes to operate under. Demonstrating ethical leadership traits (emphasis on the word “ethical”) strengthens and promotes a culture of ethical behavior throughout the company.Ethical leaders must encourage their employees to incorporate core ethical principles, display competence, knowledge, and credibility to their subordinates to establish trust, make daily ethical decisions, and develop and sustain an ethical culture. Therefore, I agree with the statement that every employee can be an ethical leader.

A code of ethics can provide guidelines for recognizing and resolving ethical issues. It is a formal statement describing what an organization expects of its employees ethically and legally; it also provides direction for all employees when encountering ambiguous situations. Some strategies that an organization can implement to help the company code of ethics inform decision-making include:

a) recurring and actualized ethics training for all employees using meaningful examples of ethical and unethical behavior to improve comprehension,

b) involving managers across the organization when developing and implementing the code of ethics to ensure “buy-in” by supervisory personnel,

c) make management available to employees to report unethical behavior, open discussion, or to receive feedback from employees on the company’s ethical practices,

d) apply swift and appropriate discipline for infractions to the company’s code of ethical conduct.

That the company’s ethics codes give the employees ethical training by allowing them to practice ethical decision-making and prepare themselves for issues they might encounter in the workplace, for example

I do to an extent agree every employee has the ability to be an ethical leader however I think it depends on the people if they want to make the effort to become an ethical leader. Being an ethical leader has its responsibilities such as setting principles and values that are recognized by the large majority. That includes integrity, respect, trust, honesty, fairness, and transparency. These can be practised and learned in order to be an ethical leader thus presenting them with the ability to become one. Regardless of the title, pay grade or even the position, if the employee themselves do not make the effort to become an ethical leader, they will not have the ability to be an ethical leader. As some say, although certain people can be born with leadership traits, most skills are learnt and developed.

There are some effective strategies or practices that organizations could implement to help utilize these codes of ethics. One could be rewarding ethical behavior. People are more likely to act with integrity if their actions are being held highly so, by using the reward strategy, it will help promote the use of codes of ethics in decision-making. While rewarding good ethical behavior may help the stakeholders in doing ethical decision-making, punishing unethical ones may help as well. By punishing, it also shows that the organizations do not take lightly on unethical behavior and that the employees and stakeholders will utilize these codes of ethics more seriously. Another strategy could be reinforcing the benefits of the code. Being consistent is important and by reinforcing it, it will be effective and even help the decision-making when the time comes.
