TU Addressing Historical Injustices Support for Senator Cory Bookers Sponsorship of HB 40 Questions – Description

Introduction: This week we will conclude our examination of the African-American Experience. One of the final issues we will examine is the issue of reparations. As noted in the Lecture 3, Packet 13, House Bill 40, Commission to Study and Develop Reparation Proposals for African Americans Act, has been introduced for consideration into every session of the House since 1989. H.B. 40’s summary states that the bill is to,

“(1) compile documentary evidence of slavery in the United States; (2) study the role of the federal and state governments in supporting the institution of slavery; (3) analyze discriminatory laws and policies against freed African slaves and their descendants; and (4) recommend ways the United States may recognize and remedy the effects of slavery and discrimination on African Americans, including through a formal apology and compensation (i.e., reparations).”[1]

The bill currently has 94 cosponsors.

Assignment: In this fourth Participation Assignment, determine whether your representative in the U.S. House of Representatives is a cosponsor of this piece of legislation (see footnote 1).[2] So, you must tell me the name of your member of the House of Representatives. If they are, do you support or oppose their sponsorship and why? If they are not, would you encourage them to sign on as a cosponsor to the bill or remain uncommitted to the bill and why? To be clear, at the heart of this assignment, is your position with regard to the items (1-4) identified in the bill’s summary (see above).
