The main difference between the Sunnis and the Shi’ites is the focused upon the line of succession from Mohammed (206). However, we are informed of just how many contrasts there are upon the Sunnis and Shi’ites. Sunnis: are the mainstream Muslims who follow the caliph (a community selected political and religious leader), and they believe the Four Rightly Guided Caliphs (Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali) served as the true successors of Mohammed. Shi’ites: are the sole followers of Ali, and only recognize Ali; they refuse to recognize Abu Bakr, Umar, and Uthman. They believe that 12 imams followed Mohammed, saying that the 12th imam went into hiding and transcended life with a promise to return, some believe that he died and was resurrected, and another group believe God hid a part of the 12th Imam and left the other half (his spirit half) on Earth. The Sunnis say these beliefs are more recognizable with Christianity than Islam (206).
