For this assignment, you will prepare brief talking points to interview questions, for the position of a Gender Affirming Communication Expert. Before you tackle this exercise, please read the course materials for Weeks 1 and 2.
Objective: To demonstrate a thorough understanding of course contents in Weeks 1 & 2, which focused on gender communication, gender roles, gender-identity development, and terminology helpful to this field of study.
A newly created position was recently posted in your organization: Gender Affirming Communication Specialist, Level 3 administrator. The position was created following successful legal action by an employee who claimed that they were discriminated against because of their gender. The successful applicant will report to the Director of Human Resources.
Your application has been favorably received. You will be interviewed next week by a panel consisting of
the Director of Human Resources, a cisgender female,
two employees who fall under the transgender and gender queer umbrella,
a cisgender male who is VP of marketing,
a cisgender female who is Director of Public Relations,
the corporate attorney (gender status undisclosed) who manages gender-based grievances.
All interviewees will be asked the same questions. A recruiter in the human resources department suggested that you consider the following questions. Prepare brief talking points in preparation for your interview.
Good afternoon. What is your preferred name and pronouns? If you wish to provide a rationale for these responses, feel free, but that is not required?
* Do you believe that executives in our organizations should be required to designate their preferred pronouns? What could be a benefit of such self-revelation? Are there any downsides?
* What are the differences between sex and gender? (Or are they the same?)
* What is a feminist? Can a male be a feminist? Do you identify as a feminist? Why or why not?
* What is meant by the term “gender fluidity?”
* Give an example of how a child learns to act as a gendered person.
Have you ever been privileged or marginalized due to your gender? (If you have not, provide examples of how others have been.)
* Provide an example of how media can influence gender.
* What are the strengths and weaknesses of Muted Gender Theory?
* As it relates to gender development, what are the strengths and weaknesses of Social Learning Theory?
Assuming you are selected, how would you approach your first three months in this position?
What areas of gender-affirming communication do you need to learn more about, and how will you accomplish that?
