Thinking Anthropologically
For this assignment, you will be using the terms and definitions found in the “Anthropological Perspectives” document to respond to the documentary “Kiki.”
Step 1: Read “Anthropological Perspectives.” This information was also in Chapter 1 from week one, so this should just be a refresher.
Step 2: Watch “Kiki” on Kanopy. Please keep in mind that this has some strong language and is about LGBTQ+ folks who participate in New York’s ball culture. It may not be appropriate for all audiences if you have younger people around when you watch.
Step 3: Answer the below questions.
Questions (answer each in 1-3 paragraphs)
A holistic approach allows anthropologists to see the ways that various aspects of people’s lives interact. What are at least two aspects of life that interact in the subculture portrayed in Kiki? You can use a specific person’s story or speak more in general about the group of people in ball culture.
Describe the importance of using a culture relativistic approach in anthropology. Imagine you were an anthropologist doing research within the context of Kiki and use that setting as an example in your answer.
Pick one of the readings from this week (“Sex Work”
“Mama’s Family” or “Modernization in Mexico) and compare/contrast the fictive kinship dynamics to those found in Kiki.
4. Imagine that you are able to participate in fieldwork to follow up to the making of Kiki and you are tasked with doing interviews. Discuss any parts of the documentary which you would especially like to follow up. Who would you like to interview? What questions would you be interested to ask?
