ANSWER THE QUESTION: What role did gender and/or race play in American religions during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries?
Essay prompt: Essays should be 4-5 pages, and they should be double-spaced with 12-point Times New Roman font and 1” margins. Supporting evidence should be sourced from multiple class periods, and all evidence should be properly cited. I simply ask for consistency.
NOTE: Simply use the materials that we have covered in class to answer one of the essay prompts. Anything between Week 5 and Week 9 is fair game for this essay
Week 5  Reading– Religion & Anxieties about Gender in Nineteenth-Century America
Reading 1:   Cassandra Yacovazzi, Escaped Nuns: True Womanhood and the Campaign Against Convents in Antebellum America (2018), pages. 1-47.
Reading 2.  “The Power of the Word(s)” in Sarah Barringer Gordon, The Mormon Question: Polygamy and Constitutional Conflict in Nineteenth-Century America (2002), pp. 19-54.
Week 9 Readings– Religion in Modern America, Part I
Reading 1: “Six: Of God and Caeser,” God in America, PBS (2010)
David R. Swartz, Moral Minority: The Evangelical Left in an Age of Conservatism (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013), pp. 153-169.
Reading 2: Khyati Joshi, “South Asian Religions in Contemporary America” in The Oxford Handbook of Religion and Race in American History, ed. Paul Harvey and Kathryn Gin Lum (2018).
