The Impact of American Beliefs on The Social Lives Discussion – Description
PART 1:
Review the PRAMS data for your state. https://www.cdc.gov/prams/prams-data/selected-mch-indicators.html If your state doesn’t participate in PRAMS, just pick any state of choice.
Select 5 health indicators and write their outcomes in sentence form, using correct terminology as you learned in the course resources for this week and last week. i.e, The rate of X for years 2019-2020 is X.” or “The percent of preterm births in X is Y.” In other words, I don’t want you to tell me just which indicators are measured, I want you to tell me what those indicators say about the health of childbearing people in the state.
PART 2:
Review the attached Presentation (7.2) to further expand on how that social determinant affects the health problem. How do issues of socioeconomic status, race, and other marginalized identities relate to the determinant or outcome? Are there populations who are at higher or lower risk? What are the mechanisms by which these disparities play out? You must cite at least one reliable source (websites are OK if from a reputable source) in your discussion and your post must be a minimum of 150 words.
PART 3:
skim through THE ATTACHED book chapter on US Social Policies and Health paying particular attention to the five iconic American beliefs. While the book is 10 years old now, much of the content is still relevant. Discuss how a US social policy or social belief impacts health, particularly the health of childbearing persons and families. Discuss what actions/beliefs/factors are necessary for change. Use your knowledge of the social determinants of health and the life course perspective to support your point. You are also free to share any quotes, statistics, or issues that grabbed your interest.
