St Johns University The Race to Determine the Structure of DNA Questions – Question Description
I’m working on a biology discussion question and need a sample draft to help me learn.
Somewhere in the 1940s and 1950s, researchers including Avery, McCleod, McCarty, Hershey, and Chase determined that the genetic material that permitted heredity/inheritance was DNA.
This resulted in a no holds barred race to determine the exact structure of DNA. While several postulated the structure incorrectly initially, eventually Watson and Crick were credited with discovering the correct structure of DNA.
Research the events that led up to the discovery of the structure of DNA following the discovery that it was the genetic material.
Who participated in this “race”?
How did the victor(s) determine the correct structure?
Are there any controversies surrounding these events?
Have we learned anything else interesting about the structure of DNA following this early work?
