Assessment 1 Details

This assessment has two components.

(1) Students will create a genogram to demonstrate a family tree of three generations. The genogram will provide an insight into their family system.Β 

(2) Students are required to complete a written reflection. Β A template will be provided for this in class assessment.

This assessment accounts for 50% of your total grade for this unit and will be marked according to the following assessment criteria:

The genogram is created separately to the written reflection. Complete the following criteria for your genogram diagram:

  1. Create a genogram identifying three generations of your family tree.
  2. Apply a genogram legend (symbols chart) to your personalised genogram.
  3. Include the names, ages (where possible) and cultural background of all family members.
  4. Provide dates of birth, death, marriage, separation, divorce and other major life events.

Include significant other life changes, such as, illness, migration and transitions.

You will work on your genogram from week 1 to week 5. You will have it ready to submit in class in week 6. It will be uploaded to Moodle.

Your genogram can be:

  • A photo/screenshot of something that you have drawn by hand
  • Created using a software/program that is uploadable to Moodle

NB: The format is not important. It must be clear, readable and understandable.

The written reflectionΒ 

This assessment requires reflection on the writing of your personal genogram, and knowledge of using genogram is social work practice. Students are expected to review learning materials on genograms in preparation for in-class written assessment. No notes – hand-written or typed – will be permitted to be brought into class.

Students will complete a written reflection answering the following questions:

  1. Describe your personal experience of researching and completing your family genogram. What did you learn about yourself? (250 words)
  2. Evaluating the effectiveness of genograms in social workΒ (answer this question the case study provided in class (700 words).
  3. Demonstrating understanding of key ethical issues when using genograms in social workΒ (answer this question using examples from the case study provided in class) (250 words).
  4. NB Clarity and organisation – presenting your work in a well-structured, logical, and clear manner.
