Essay Question Mental health recovery is a complex and often lifelong journey which requires a wide
range of interventions to support the unique needs of individuals. In an essay of 1,200
words (+/- 10%) critically examine and answer all of the following:
- What has the impact of the consumer or survivor movement been in promoting
holistic mental health recovery and combatting stigma and discrimination in
psychiatric rehabilitation? In your response provide examples from one or more
of the following: human rights, peer supports, feminism, addiction recovery,
self-help movements.
How do strengths-based and recovery-oriented practices support mental health
recovery for consumers? Provide at least one example.
Choose ONE of the following mental health disorders: Anxiety Disorder,
Borderline Personality Disorder/Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder OR
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. First, briefly (no more than 80 words) explain
the reason for choosing this disorder reflecting on your lived and/or
professional experience. Next, based on your review of the literature, discuss
what holistic therapeutic interventions might be most effective for your chosen
disorder in community mental health work
Research requirements
When preparing your essay you must use and cite ALL of the following:
- Chapter 1and/or Chapter 2 of the textbook Meadows et al. (2012) discussed in class
and available in Weeks 1 and 2 Moodle “Reading and Resources”; and - StVincent’s Hospital Melbourne (2014). Strengths model: a recovery-oriented
approach to mental health services core training manual, pp. 6-14 ONLY discussed in class
and available in Week 1 Moodle “Reading and Resources”; and - AMINIMUM of 5 recent (published in the last 10 years or so) and relevant (your
evidence must be clearly related to your discussion points) peer-reviewed academic journal

articles available on Moodle in Weeks 1-4 and Week 6 located in the “Readings and Resources”
section and/or academic articles from your own research.
