SMC USGS Topographic Quadrangle Map Discussion – Description
To do this assignment, you will first need to find a USGS topographic quadrangle to use to answer the questions below for your primary post. Go to the USGS TopoView website Links to an external site., select “View and Download maps now,” enter a location in TopoView (pick one of your favorite cities or locations in the U.S.), and select a map on the right (e.g., 2019). Any location and year in the U.S. is fine for this exercise.
View the map online or download it, and then answer the questions below for your primary post. You will also need to take screenshots of certain parts of your map in order to receive full credit. If you don’t know how to do screenshots on the computer you’re using, do a Google search or use a free screen-capture program such as Wisdom Screenhunter. Please crop your screenshots so that you embed only the information requested rather than the entire map. (NOTE: do not try to upload or insert the entire map! It’s a very large file – just take screenshots of certain sections of it and upload those screenshots)
Answer the following questions for your primary post (minimum length = 150 words):
What location did you choose for this assignment and why? What kind of human and natural features do you see on this map? Insert/embed a screenshot of your favorite location on the map. (attached screenshots will not earn credit because they have to be downloaded in order to be viewed, which makes them less accessible to your fellow students)
What is the latitude and longitude coordinates for this location? You may do a Google search to help you. Make sure to format your coordinates correctly, for example, Santa Monica’s coordinates are 34 N, 118 W (you can leave out the degree symbol).
What is the scale of your map? You can answer this by either describing the bar scale or the fractional scale (e.g., 1:24,000) for the map.
This map has contour lines that indicate elevation. Examine these lines on the map, and then try to figure out where on the map you find the highest elevation. Insert/embed a screenshot of that highest elevation location, and explain to us how you figured out that is the highest point on the map.
Lastly, go to timeanddate.com to an external site. and look up this location. Tell us what time sunrise and sunset are at this location today.
