SDSU Nurses Role and Responsibility as Health Educator Discussion – Description
I need someone to respond to the following student discussion which I have provided below. Also, below the student discussion reply I have provided the original discussion prompt that the student discussion was referring to. I have provided an example of how to reply to a student to give you an idea of how to respond to a student discussion.
Student Discussion That Needs to Be Responded to:
One of the most important roles of a nurse is being an educator. This is because the nurse is the person who is most connected to the needs of the patient therefore nurses help educate patients on the medications they are taking, procedures, and ways to promote a healthier lifestyle. Health promotion is the key to healthier individuals which helps the community as a whole become more informed and able to make healthier decisions that will prevent future hospitalizations. While it seems like an easy task it is not. There are two important variables that can affect effective learning. The first is the ability and knowledge the nurse processes and how well of a communicator they are. The second is the ability of the patient and willingness to learn. The nurse then must assess what barriers to communication are present such as a mental disability, difficulty hearing, patient’s education status, and any distractions that could limit learning. After this is done the nurse can tailor and educate the patient with what works best for the patient. For example, a patient could learn better if others are supporting them such as group therapy. Another patient could learn if the family is involved.
Rosenstok’s model illustrates “five components to change behavior which involves susceptibility and severity of a health threat, benefits to reducing illness, barriers that prevent action, and the ability to take action” (Grand Canyon University, 2022). These components should be analyzed when behavioral objectives are not being met and the nurse needs to focus the efforts on patient understanding and adherence to treatment.
Grand Canyon University (Ed.). (2022). Health promotion: Health and wellness across the continuum (2nd ed.)
Original Discussion Prompt:
Describe the nurse’s role and responsibility as health educator. What strategies, besides the use of learning styles, can a nurse educator consider when developing tailored individual care plans, or for educational programs in health promotion? When should behavioral objectives be utilized in a care plan or health promotion?
Example of How to Respond to a Student Discussion Reply
Hi Nita,
I like how you discuss both the teacher observing the student and the student observing their own art. You bring up excellent points about the teachers observing the children, because it does help the teacher to better communicate with the children and understand them better. As teachers, it is very important to nurture students, particularly if they are very young, I think, because it allows them to better understand the needs of the student, and how to work with them. Paying attention to what the student is drawing, and seeing how the student reacts to their own work can improve the teachers’ understanding.
Expressing feelings in this discussion board reply examples is a major component of growing up. The more a student is able to express those feelings, the more they can understand them. I liked reading about what you said on this topic, and I agree that the art is a very useful tool that students can learn to express their feelings effectively. If they do not express them, they are keeping them inside, and drawing can become a form of counseling for them. In my opinion, I think the drawing can be particularly useful for many students who are quiet. These students do not often express themselves verbally, and drawing can be a way for them to understand their feelings, and to release some pent up sadness of hostile feelings, for example. I think this form of therapy sticks with many people throughout life, and they continue to use drawing as a coping mechanism.
Thanks,
Steven
