ssessment 2 Details: Policy Analysis (40%)
Due date: Sunday of Week 7
Weighting: 40%
Format: Written essay
Word count: 1500 words (+/- 10%)
Task overview
This assessment is worth 40% of your final grade and requires you to write an essay analysing the history, ideological
influences and social justice impact of a chosen social policy.
Instructions
Choose one social policy and its corresponding policy area from the list below, and write a 1500-word (+/- 10%) policy
analysis addressing the following question:
Question: How have political ideologies shaped your chosen social policy and policy area over time, and what
impact have these developments had on advancing social justice in Australia?
Social policy Policy area
The National Disability Insurance Scheme
(NDIS)
Funding and support for people living with a disability
The Humanitarian Settlement Program (HSP) Settlement services for refugees and migrants
Fair Work Employment rights and workplace relations
Closing the Gap Health and wellbeing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples
In your essay you should draw on the required readings from weeks 3, 5, and 6 to:
- Analyse how political ideologies have shaped your chosen policy over time, using key concepts from the unit
to examine a specific policy document (see below) as evidence of these ideological influences (week 3). - Situate your policy within the broader historical context of welfare in Australia (week 5)
- Define social justice and use this definition to evaluate the impact of your policy (week 6)
Sources
You must provide a minimum of seven (7) references for this assessment. These references should include the
following: - Unit readings (3 minimum): You must reference at least one of the provided unit readings from each of
weeks 3, 5 and 6 (minimum of three in total). - Primary sources (2 minimum): You must include references to at least one (1) primary policy document
(e.g., political speech; government department website), and at least one (1) historical document. Your
analysis should also be supported with direct quotations from these sources. You will find a selection of policy
and historical documents and relevant websites in the Assessment 2: Policy Documents file on the
Assessments page. - At least two (2) additional peer-reviewed journal articles (2 minimum): these should complement rather
than replace your engagement with the other listed sources. Direct hyperlinks to the full source must be provided
in your reference list. You will find some sources to kick-start your research on the Readings page in Moodle.
It is essential to demonstrate engagement with the unit materials throughout your essay. References to external
sources should complement—not replace—your use of unit content. While clear communication is important, this
is not an English writing test. An essay that shows strong understanding of unit concepts, theories, and materials—even
with some grammatical errors—will score higher than a well-written essay that lacks meaningful connection to the unit
content.
Academic Integrity - Your essay must be written in your own words using your own language skills. While you may use AI to
help clarify difficult concepts during your research and planning stages, you must not use AI to generate or
polish your responses. We are interested in reading your understanding of key concepts, theories and policy
examples in your words. - Submissions that are partially or completely AI generated will be unlikely to meet the assessment criteria and
may be referred to the Academic Integrity team for further investigation.

11 | P a g e - You must include a reference list in APA 7 format that contains all—and only—those sources cited in your
essay. - Accurate reference details have been provided for each of the required readings in the Readings and
Resources section of the relevant week. - For this assessment, all in-text references must include page numbers to indicate the exact location of
- relevant content or ideas in the source. This applies to any material—digital or printed—that includes page
- numbers. Most scholarly sources, including online journal articles and our textbook, typically have page
- numbers. The teaching team will check in-text references during marking to ensure accuracy. If an online source
- does not have page numbers, simply follow all other conventions of the APA 7 referencing style.
- Every sources in your reference list must include a direct hyperlink to the full version of that source. These
links should be accessible to AE staff and students. Where hyperlinks direct to paid journals or other sources
behind paywalls, it will be assumed that these materials have not been accessed and read. (If you have used a
physical copy of the textbook, please include the catalogue number and period of your loan. E.g., [413.8 BCC.
