San Jose State University Descriptive Statistics Worksheet – Description
Your analysis will be based on these descriptive statistics. Having descriptive statistics by now will give your team enough time to prepare the report based on your interpretations.
a) Calculate Reliabilities. The questionnaire has four variables, each measured through several questions. All of the questions going from 1=Strongly Disagree to 6=Strongly Agree. Using what you learned when using SPSS for descriptive statistics:
Reliability of the questions that measure “Attitudes about environmental communication:”
Conversations about ocean conservation issues can make a difference
It is necessary to discuss ocean conservation issues
I usually learn something when I listen to others talking about ocean conservation
Talking about ocean conservation is important to our future
Reliability of the questions that measure “Perceived social consequences:”
The effects of harming the oceans on public health are worse than we realize
Ocean conservation will help people have a better quality of life.
Harming the oceans affects people all over the world.
Ocean conservation benefits everyone.
Reliability of the questions that measure “Perceived Urgency”
We don’t need to worry much about ocean conservation because future generations will be better able to deal with these problems than we are now
Ocean conservation is not an immediate concern
There is no urgent need to act upon ocean conservation
Reliability of the questions that measure “Proenvironmental intentions:”
I would contribute money to ocean conservation organizations.
I would participate in a demonstration against companies that are harming the oceans.
I would sign a petition in support of tougher ocean conservation laws.
I would boycott the products of a company that harms our oceans.
b) Calculate the means and standard deviations using SPSS the same way you did when we discussed descriptive statistics:
Mean and standard deviation of “Attitudes about environmental communication”
Mean and standard deviation of “Perceived social consequences”
Mean and standard deviation of “Perceived social consequences”
Mean and standard deviation of “Proenvironmental intentions”
c) Include them in a document where you write a short paragraph for each statistic, creating bar graphs for those means your team sees as relevant (never graph standard deviations), and d) describing what they represent.
