San Bernardino Valley College Art History of Surrealism Discussion – Description

Introduction

This week we take a look together at the history of Surrealism, as it formed in post-World War I Europe and as it has made its way into our wider culture up to today.

The word ‘surrealism’ itself has become one way for describing the bizarre, the irrational, and even the hallucinatory. It seems very fitting to think about Surrealist art today as, over the past months life has been, arguably, very surreal, as we have collectively experienced the effects of the global pandemic.

In the video below, we are introduced to Surrealist art. It argues the case for Surrealism, and why we should care about it.

Instructions

Watch the 10 minute video below provide on [1] fact that you learned from the video including its timing in the video. Then state why it stuck out to you.

Please format your post like the example below:

Fact: The Surrealist movement gave birth to a number of techniques in the visual arts. For example, ‘frottage’, which is where you place a sheet of paper over a grained or textured surface and rub it with pencil or crayon. German painter Max Ernst practiced this technique.
Timing: 2 minutes 30 seconds
Reasoning: This fact stuck out to me because I learned to do this technique as a child in elementary school using wax crayons and it was one of my favorite ways of making artwork at the time.

The catch: there is doubling up on facts. That means that you have to make sure that no other student in the class has posted the same fact as you.

Best approach is to watch the video and write down 3-5 facts that stuck out to you. Then scroll through the discussion and check-out all of the other facts posted by the other members of the class and post a unique one that you found and which is not yet submitted by another classmate. Hint: The sooner you do the assignment, the easier it is.
