Rowan University Hypothesis Test Comparison Worksheet – Description
A researcher wanted to compare the self-esteem scores of children of divorced parents to the general population. To do so, she measured self-esteem in 80 children of divorced parents and got a sample mean for self-esteem score of 27. If the population self-esteem average is μ=30 with a standard deviation of σ=7, run a full hypothesis test using the z-score hypothesis test to test the hypothesis that children of divorced parents have significantly different levels of self-esteem compared to the population (alpha of α=0.05, two-tailed test). For your answer to this question, write a paragraph IN YOUR OWN WORDS that contains all of the following information:
(a) Hypotheses
(b) Critical values
(c) Final z-score answer
(d) Conclusion about the null hypothesis
(e) Written summary of the conclusions that can be made from this study
You are not required to show all calculation work for this question, but it can be helpful to include to earn partial credit if you make a calculation error. MAKE SURE TO LABEL EACH SECTION IN YOUR ANSWER USING A THROUGH E (see list above).
Researchers have noted a decline in cognitive functioning as people age (Bartus, 1990). However, the results from other research suggest that the antioxidants in foods such as blueberries may reduce and even reverse these age-related declines (Joseph et al., 1999). To examine this phenomenon, suppose that a researcher obtains a sample of n=8 adults who are between the ages of 65 and 75. The researcher uses a standardized test to measure cognitive performance for each individual. The participants then begin a 2-month program in which they receive daily doses of blueberry supplement. At the end of the 2-month period, the researcher again measures cognitive performance in each participant. Hypothetical data can be found below. Using a related-samples t-test with an alpha of 0.05, two-tailed, is there enough evidence to support that there is a significant difference in cognitive performance before and after the supplement doses? Make sure to run an entire hypothesis test, including a measure of effect size.
