My research topic is “The Impact of Nurse-to-Patient Ratios on Patient Outcomes in Critical Care Settings.” The problem statement is that this study will aim to investigate the relationship between nurse-to-patient ratios and patient outcomes in critical care settings, with a focus on identifying the optimal ratio that promotes better patient outcomes and enhances nursing practice. My rationale for this is because I chose this topic because nurse-to-patient ratios have been a subject of debate and concern in the field of nursing. Adequate staffing levels play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety, quality of care, and nurse satisfaction. Understanding the impact of nurse-to-patient ratios on patient outcomes, particularly in critical care settings, can help inform evidence-based staffing decisions and policies. This topic is meaningful in the field of nursing because it addresses an important issue that directly affects patient care and the well-being of nurses. Inadequate nurse staffing, characterized by high nurse-to-patient ratios, has been associated with a range of negative outcomes. Studies have shown that when nurses are responsible for caring for too many patients simultaneously, they may experience increased workload, fatigue, and burnout, which can compromise their ability to provide safe and effective care. This can lead to medication errors, patient falls, healthcare-associated infections, and other adverse events. Furthermore, high nurse-to-patient ratios may impede timely monitoring and assessment of patients’ conditions, resulting in delayed recognition of deteriorating patients or changes in vital signs. Such delays can have serious consequences, including increased morbidity and mortality rates among critically ill patients.

Research Topic and Problem Statement
My proposed research topic is on nursing staff retention, especially related to the reasons why nurses may leave a position or career entirely.
In the nursing profession, many nurses have either quit their positions or have left the career entirely. While this has been an issue since the mid 1930s, this issue is even more magnified due to the recent pandemic (University of Pennsylvania Nursing, n.d.). Nursing turnover costs hospitals millions every year, which can affect patient outcomes and the quality of care provided (Taylor-Clark et al., 2022). It is important to understand the multitude of reasons why nurses are leaving and to determine possible solutions to prevent further turnover in a career that already demands so much.
I chose this topic because I recently moved to a different hospital and have overheard throughout my early career how common it is for nurses to move around. With the popularity of travel contracts and the economic state of the world, it is no surprise that some nurses are willing to move to find better opportunities elsewhere, especially when their current workplace does not have the means or will to retain their nurses. I believe this is meaningful to the field of nursing because we must understand why turnover rates are so high in a career that allures with stability. While this is a multifaceted issue, it is important to analyze reasons why nurses leave and to possibly find solutions to this problem.
