Reading 10 – Description
For your final reading report of the term, read the book chapter “How Can We Succeed In Our Intercultural Travels?” by Hall, Covarrubias, and Kirschbaum. The chapter addresses two main issues: (1) how people move between cultures in general, and (2) specifically, how we can use these theories when traveling (this might mean business travel, study abroad, personal vacations, or any other trip that brings us into contact with a culture different than our own).
Task. Write a three-paragraph reading response of at least 400 words that responds to the prompts below. Each paragraph should be at least 6-8 well-developed sentences.
Paragraph 1. First, define acculturation. Second, briefly explain the U-curve model. What are the 4 stages that people go through when entering a new culture?
Paragraph 2. Explain Kim’s cultural adaptation model. What roles do personal communication, predisposition, environment, and social communication play in the process of acculuration in the model.
Paragraph 3. Choose two other concepts from the chapter. Briefly explain in at least 2-3 sentences each. How can these concepts help us to be better intercultural travelers? (This can be anything, really.).
