PVC Biology Origin of Species and Natural Selection Questions – Description
1. Origin of species and natural selection. What did Darwin mean by the phrase “descent with modification”? How does that phrase link into his concept of evolution? Please explain in your own words.
2.Neanderthal DNA. Homo neanderthalis is a species of hominid that is now known to have lived with early Homo sapiens for as long as 35,000 years. As the Neanderthals were specialized to a geographic area, they were not readily adaptable, and ultimately went the way of extinction. However, it is also now known that early Humans lived peacefully with Neanderthals and even interbred with them – so many, if not all modern humans of western European descent have Neanderthal DNA contained within their own genetic structure — and we can even test for the presence and percentage of this DNA.
Your assignment is to research the current information on this Human/Neanderthal relationship, and describe the testing used to assess the amount of Neanderthal DNA that we may have mixed with our own.
3. Vaccines. Some researchers are concerned that the overuse use of antibiotics have caused the evolution of resistant strains of bacteria that are potentially dangerous on a global scale. Have we created invincible strains of bacteria that could rival the effects of the Plague, or are there new antibiotics that have been discovered that can help us with this issue? While we anxiously waiting for the new antibiotics, vaccines seems to be our only option in the light of the antibiotic resistant bacteria, and in the increased rate of antivaxxers (people that are against vaccination). Please describe the primary and secondary response of our immune system and also how would you argue (using facts, not opinions) with a person that rejects vaccination?
