Purdue Global University Systems Model Fashioned by Betty Neuman Nursing Discussion – Description
I need one answer to each person please (2 people in total) I am attaching their answers and also my initial discussion post, as well as the chapters in case you need them, thank you
Liliana: The nursing theory selected for this discussion is Neuman’s systems model fashioned by Betty Neuman. Nursing is approached holistically and systematically using the Systems Model, which also incorporates some flexibility. The idea is centered on the way the patient’s system reacts to real or anticipated environmental stresses and how primary, secondary, and tertiary nursing preventative interventions are used to achieve, and maintain patient system health (Işik & Erci, 2020). By directing nurses to provide patients receiving care a comprehensive level of care, Neuman’s system model advances nursing practice. The model goes through the stresses that have an impact on people and the steps nurses ought to undertake to assist patients to get well. Due to the importance of reducing patient stressors, the model prioritizes primary, secondary, and tertiary preventative care measures (Akhlaghi et al., 2020). The NSM theory represents a consideration of the person, environment, health, and nursing, which are the four nursing metapardigms that guide theory development. The term person refers to a type of client system made up of an individual, a group, a family, or a community. The following five interrelated factors make up each individual: physiology, psychology, sociocultural, development, and spirituality. According to Işik and Erci (2020), the environment is made up of internal, external, and man-made elements that affect how well a client copes with stress. The optimum potential condition of well-being at any given moment, according to Newman’s concept, is optimal system stability. This continuum spans from wellness to sickness. To preserve a client’s optimum level of health, nursing is seen to be a profession that is especially well-suited to help protect the client’s system stability against stress (Akhlaghi et al., 2020).
The human, also known as a client or client system, is a composite of variables, including physiological (physical), psychological (mental), social, developmental, and spiritual factors. This idea is one of the theory’s key tenets. Another fundamental concept is variables, which determine the individual’s levels of risk, health standards, and the needs they present (Işik & Erci, 2020). The concept covers the physical/ physiological, psychosocial, spiritual, and developmental variables that affect health. The ring structure is described as a fundamental arrangement of shielding concentric rings that directs the achievement or upkeep of the system’s reliability and integrity. The generated, internal, and external surroundings that influence a person’s perception of stressors are included in the three components of the environment concept, which offers a structure of such rings (Akhlaghi et al., 2020). Stability, a need for health and well-being, may be disrupted by a variety of pressures. Another key idea is the nursing (nurse’s) concern. It has to do with correctly identifying the environmental factors and stresses that have an impact on well-being instability and helping the client to keep their health at its best (Işik & Erci, 2020). Another primary concept introduced by Neuman is stressors or sources of stress, which refer to the factors that can harm a patient’s health and wellness, which take different forms, including physical, mental, emotional, or behavioral elements, which should be diagnosed.
Using the Systems Model also includes considerable flexibility, nursing may be treated holistically and methodically. To preserve, attain, and maintain patient system health, primary, secondary, and tertiary healthcare preventive interventions are utilized (Işik & Erci, 2020). The approach is based on how the patient’s system responds to actual or predicted environmental pressures. Neuman’s system model promotes nursing practice by instructing nurses to offer patients receiving comprehensive care. The model explores the pressures that affect individuals and the actions nurses should take to help patients recover. The approach gives priority to primary, secondary, and tertiary preventive actions since loweringpatient stresses is crucial (Akhlaghi et al., 2020). The four nursing metaparadigms, including person, environment, health, and nursing, which are all taken into account by NSM. A sort of client system known as a “person” might be made up of an individual, a group, a family, or a community. Each person is made up of the following five interconnected components, physiology (physical), psychology, sociocultural, development-related, and spirituality. Işik and Erci (2020) contend that a client’s environment consists of internal, environmental, and man-made components that have an impact on how effectively they handle stress. According to Newman’s approach, optimal system stability is the best possible state of well-being at any given time. The spectrum of this ranges from health to illness. Nursing is seen to be a profession that is particularly well-suited to assist safeguard the client’s system stability against stressors to maintain the client’s optimal degree of health (Akhlaghi et al., 2020).

Ashley:Interestingly, there have been multiple theories around teaching in general, not just in the delivery of nursing education. Learning theories such as constructivism, transformative learning, and humanistic theories, just to name a few are further broken down into further sub-categories but many of these theories have psychology at their roots. (Mukhalalati & Taylor, 2019).
One of the models I found interesting and that has come to the forefront in all education from grade school to graduate school during the pandemic is the flipped classroom method (FCM). Tami Seifert (2023) explained FCM extremely well, “In the flipped classroom model, the learning process is founded on active learning theories, peer learning, and collaborative learning, with the focus on the learners at the center. The learners learn and exercise new content through online, digital applications that stimulate learners’ thinking, while the lesson time is devoted to active learning such as exercises, discussion, problem solving, presenting questions and collaborative work. The learners perform their learning before the lesson and need to have a basic understanding of the main points of information, to perform required assignments, and to think about points which they did not understand or that caused confusion. They can then resolve difficulties with their teachers and peers in the classroom.”
In this theory, the student is at the center of the education process, the teacher performs as a facilitator or mediator, the foundation of the learning is done in the comfort of the homes and time management is the responsibility of the student. The student takes an active role in their own learning rather than passively (Barbour & Schuessler, 2019).
With all this being said, where I could see this model being more of a hindrance to an individual’s learning are for those of earlier generations where technology may not be their forte and researching reliable sources of information is not within their wheelhouse. I wonder how my peers feel about this method, since we are essentially living the FCM in our current studies and if you feel that this method of learning really assists in critically thinking about all the topics presented?
