PU Reply to discussion – Description

Obtaining and discussing sexual history with a patient can be challenging. It is important for health care providers to build a relationship with their patients and find an appropriate way to approach the discussion without discomfort. Sexuality is an important part of living a healthy life. A sexual history can lead to very useful information about a patient’s health. When it comes to sexual history of patients of a different ethnicity or religion, physicians should consider familiarizing themselves with their patients’ beliefs. It can be hard to know every belief but consider getting to know them based on the community. Lack of privacy can be another barrier to discussing sexual history. Try to provide privacy to help the patient feel more comfortable (Rabathaly & Chattu, 2019). Different communication skills to help facilitate the conversation of sexual history include empathy, honesty, and openness. It is also important to leave bias behind when it comes to discussing sexual history (Uzdavine et al., 2022). The more a physician has the conversation with their patients, the more comfortable it may become. Consider practicing different ways to approach the conversation, as well as appropriate responses (Ross et al, 2020). Rabathaly, P., & Chattu, V. (2019).
