In our final Participation Assignment you are, first, to identify a single issue the U.S. will confront over the course of the next twenty to forty years and describe the nature of this challenge. Second, you must identify how you think the U.S. will respond to this challenge. Keep in mind that “U.S.” in this context is more than the federal, state, or local governments. What I mean by U.S. here is our society writ large, including its people, its major intuitions in religion, business and industry, art, education, and, of course, its political intuitions.
Introduction: Over the course of this six-week summer session, we have examined the lives and experiences of many different members of racial and ethnic groups. We have examined how they have made efforts to become part of the United States’ culture. Some have achieved success in this transition while others continue to struggle for full inclusion and acceptance. At this point you can now reflect on directions for the future. Thinking about diversity, you are to speculate on a single major challenge the U.S. will confront in the next twenty to forty years and how the U.S. will likely respond to this challenge.
There are, of course, many different topics related to diversity. We have only examined those topics related to the struggles and successes of ethnic and racial minority groups. In this assignment you may extend the definition of diversity beyond those important but narrow boundaries. For example, you may wish to discuss (a) immigration, (b) rights of the LGBTQ+ community, (c) challenges of religious minorities, (d) growing disparity between rich and poor in the United States, (e) an aging population, (f) the shift to a majority-minority society, (g) potent ideological divisions within society, or (h) geographic diversity (urban-rural or costal-interior variations). These are only a handful of potential topics. Your experience and imagination provide even more vivid discussions of near-term diversity challenges.
