PRCC Southwest Asia and North Africa Google Earth Pro Questions – Description

Google Earth Exercise #5
Southwest Asia and North Africa
Make sure your “Borders and Layers” menu is on
1.  Type 31.03, 32.31 into the Search box.  Zoom out. What is this waterway?  You learned about it in this week’s powerpoint.
2.  Go to the Bimmeh Sinkhole in Oman.  You may have to zoom in.  Turn on your ‘Photos’ layer.  According to the photos that pop up, what is this sinkhole mostly used for?  Be specific.

3.  Type Mecca into the Search box.  Zoom into about 16,000 ft.  See the Great Mosque on the right?  Click on it to go there (no closer than about 7,000 ft.).  Turn on the ‘3D Buildings’ layer and give it time to load.  See the big clock mentioned in the powerpoint lecture?  Get close enough to it and click-drag-manipulate it until you can see the clock face.  What time is it?  Leave your ‘3D layer’ on.
To help you see the clock face better, you can manipulate the two white circles in the upper right-hand corner of your screen.  These are your navigation controls.  Brief instructions on how to use them will pop up when you mouse over the circles.

4.  Go to 25.141, 55.186.  This is Burj al-Arab, voted one of the most luxurious hotels in the world.  Zoom into ~940 feet.  See the circular helipad on top of the hotel?  What letter is written on the platform?  (This hotel is SO cool.  It has a SEVEN-star rating!  Look at some pictures.)

5.  Go to Sadr City, Baghdad, Iraq.  See the waterway that runs through this part of town?  One section of the waterway is not like the others.  This portion of the waterway is probably where sewage or other kind of runoff is diverted.  What color has the runoff turned this section of water?
SubSaharan Africa
6.  Type 7.25, 0.25 into the Search box.  This man-made lake has the largest reservoir in the world.  What is the name of the lake?

7.  Type -17.924, 25.858 into the Search box.  You are looking at one of the most spectacular waterfalls in the entire world.  What waterfall is this?

8.  Type 13.5, -15.5 into the Search box.  Zoom out until you see borderlines.  What is the name of this African country that’s almost entirely surrounded by another country?

9.  Type -33.81, 18.36 into the Search box.  Nelson Mandela was imprisoned on this island for much of his life.  Now the island is a national heritage site and is visited by tourists from Africa and around the world.  What is the name of this island?

10.  Type 14.667, -17.398 into the Search box.  On this island, enslaved Africans were kept before being shipped to the Americas.  What is the name of this island?   (You will see the remains of the slave fortress on the northernmost point of the island.  Look at it with your ‘Photos’.  VERY cool, VERY creepy.  It’s a tourist attraction today.)
