Differentiating Serotonin Syndrome from Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome Flowchart .
Assignment Content
Next week you will study psychotropic medications used in treating depression and other mood disorders. This assessment is in preparation for Week 2 as you compare serotonin syndrome and neuroleptic malignant syndrome.
When providing psychotropic medication to patients, emergencies can arise. Two of these “medication emergencies” that can arise when treating depression and other mood disorders are serotonin syndrome and neuroleptic malignant syndrome. It is important for you to be able to distinguish serotonin syndrome from neuroleptic malignant syndrome because the treatments are different for these potentially life-threatening conditions. To demonstrate your understanding of these differences, please do the following:
Read the article “Differentiating serotonin syndrome and neuroleptic malignant syndrome: Symptoms can overlap, but accurate diagnosis is critical because treatments are distinct” from the University Library.
Create a 1-page flowchart in a Microsoft Word document using SmartArt. Reference your textbooks, the articles assigned, and any additional current evidence. Title the algorithm “Differentiating Serotonin Syndrome from Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome” and construct it in such a way that you could print it out and place it in the charting area of your treatment facility to remind you and other health care staff of the diagnosis and treatment of these two conditions. Keep it simple, clear, complete, and useful.
Include the following:
Title: “Differentiating Serotonin Syndrome from Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome”
Signs and symptoms
Pertinent major risk factors including major medication classes (e.g., SSRIs, antiemetics, antipsychotics)
Differentiating signs and symptoms including laboratory values
Treatment(s)
Cite and reference according to APA guidelines. References can either be placed on a second page or in the footer of the 1-page flowchart .
