PH 102 PU Applying Utilitarianism to Environmental Conservation Essay – Description
Introduction to Ethical Thinking
Discussion
Units 3-6 focus on what Weston calls the families of values and the formal ethical theories that focus on each family. In each of these units, our discussion will focus on using the ethical theory to reflect upon and analyze an ethical issue that you are interested in or passionate about (e.g. childhood hunger, homelessness, environmental damage, environmental conservation, animal rights, issues in education or healthcare, etc.).
For your first post, choose an ethical issue and apply the Utilitarian ethical theory to the issue.
Describe the problem. Do a bit of research if you need to and then present the basic facts about the issue.
Identify the central values at play in the issue. Remember, this unit is focused on values in the family of happiness. So, you should choose an issue where this family of values is particularly relevant.
Analyze the issue using Utilitarianism. What, according to the theory, is the problem, and what should be done to solve it?
