Pearl River Community College Google Earth Pro Exercise – Description

Google Earth Exercise #3

Make sure your ‘Borders and Labels’ layer is on

Print this page, if desired

NOTE: Many of this week’s latitude / longitude coordinates have a ” – ” sign in front of them to denote coordinates south of the equator. Not using the ” – ” sign will give you a false answer or leave you very confused!

Australia

1. Type Gosses Bluff Range into the Search box. If you zoom out to about 36,000 feet you will see that this range is circular. In the ‘Gallery’ layer on the left panel, click the ‘Google Earth Community’ sublayer box. Several information (‘i’) icons will appear on the map. Click almost any one of these information icons. Why is this range circular? What happened here? [Unclick the ‘Gallery’ layer.]

2. Type -20.28, 150.39 into the Search box. Zoom out quite a bit. What is the name of this huge geographic feature? Let the ‘photos’ layer help you if you don’t remember it from this week’s powerpoint lecture.

3. Type -38.66, 143.10 into the Search box. Turn on your ‘Roads’ layer and give it time to load. This is the ‘Great Ocean Road’ which runs much of the length of South Australia. Using your ‘Photos’ layer, look at some of the photos taken of the giant rocks in the water just off the coastline. What are these rock features called? Turn off your ‘Roads’ layer.

4. Type -33.857, 151.215 into the Search box. What is the name of this famous cultural facility? (The ‘Photos’ here are great as well.)

5. When you fly in Google Earth to Ayres Rock (a giant rock that is sacred to aboriginals), what does Google Earth tell you is the name of that rock? “Ayres Rock” is what Anglo-Australians have called the monument, but more recently the rock is reverting back to its aboriginal name.

6. Go to Lake Te Anau, Southland, New Zealand. In the ‘Gallery’ layer, click the ‘Everytrail’ sublayer. See the small icon that appears at the very north edge of the lake? Click on this icon for information about what hikers have called one of the most beautiful hikes in the world, a hike on the Milford Track. For question 5, according to the info box that pops up, what is the length of the hike around Milford Track?

Pacific Ocean – Make sure your ‘Ocean’ layer is still on.

7. Go to 65°24’11.84″S, 99°31’36.26″E. Zoom out to about 50 miles high. Can you guess what is happening in this part of Antarctica?

8 & 9. Type 21.3679° N, 157.9771° W. For question 8, where are you? Hint: It has well-known ties to events during World War II. Now type 21.364877, -157.949988 to find the memorial associated with this famous place. The memorial is floating on top of something. For number 9, what is the memorial floating over? See the shape under the water?

10. Fly in Google Earth to Eua and also Tongatapu, two of the islands in the Pacific Ocean country of Tonga. At about 50 miles up, turn on your ‘Photos’ layer and look at the water separating the 2 islands. There are 2 or 3 photos posted in the water between the islands. What are they pictures of?
