One of my favorite activities to teach children about healthy foods is “Go Slow Whoa.” This is based off of the “nutrient-density” of foods and drinks. GO foods are nutrient dense (regardless of calories) and are considered “almost anytime food choices.” SLOW foods are “sometimes foods.” WHOA foods should be considered like a treat, chosen just “once in a while” because they are calorie-dense while not providing nutrients (“empty calories”). For kids, we want them to make good nutrition choices based on foods that provide nutrients to give them energy and help keep their bodies healthy (without focusing on the “calorie” part of that).
