NURS6003 DISCUSSION RESPONSE 2
To Prepare:
Reflect on your decision to pursue a specialty within the MSN program, including your professional and academic goals as they relate to your program/specialization.
Respond to at least two of your colleagues’ posts by sharing your thoughts on their specialty, supporting their choice or offering suggestions if they have yet to choose.
NOTE: I also chose FNP
A specialty that has a recognized shortage and limiting access to patients receiving mental health services is the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP). This limitation includes, but is not limited to, assessments, diagnosing, and prescribing much-needed medications. I started with a passion for helping substance abuse and mental health patients because many think mental health/substance use is a lost cause. As I read articles routinely and encounter those suffering from substance abuse. Those routine exposures have, once again, ushered me to return to school. I am blessed to have practiced in many areas of nursing. I’ve worked with those with developmental disabilities, hospice, dialysis, geriatric, and acute travel nursing. These experiences have provided me with skills I use in practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). By completing this PMHNP post-certification program, I will once again sit for a different state licensure exam. The PMHNP program will allow me opportunities in a much-needed specialty. I plan on taking and using this information to continue my journey as an entrepreneur in this profession. Advanced practice nursing (APN or APRN) entrepreneurship opportunities prosper as the provider shortage widens and the public places greater trust in nurses, given proven outcomes (Hahn & Cook, 2018).
Many challenges and struggles are faced each day by all professionals. My struggles include family responsibilities, working full-time, caring for an elderly grandpa, a church board member, and taking two classes full-time. However, I am so glad that time management and organizational skills were taught and learned in Nursing 101. I am doing well and moving through it all with the resources (Grammarly, Turnitin draft, writing center, skills center, etc.) and supporting help available at Walden University (Walden University Academic Skills Center. The American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) is a large organization that mental and behavioral health professionals in America utilize for evidence-based resources, educational programs, and networking with other Psychiatric-Mental Health (PMH) professionals (Okoli, 2023). To become a member of APNA, you can apply online, pay a fee of $135.00, and take advantage of full opportunities to further the care and treatment of those with mental health and substance use needs (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, 2023).
Upon completing this degree and licensure as a PMHNP, I will gain new valuable expertise in my community to provide patients with quality care from a passionate nurse impacting the healthcare spectrum through patient education.
