The Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP) must be proficient in managing acute and complex conditions across various settings including the emergency department, inpatient units, progressive care, and critical care units. For this assignment, you will explore the management strategies of one acute illness of a patient in the emergency department (ED), and non-critical inpatient units. Not progressive or critical care unit patients.
Pick one acute illness that you will likely see in the acute care setting (Appendicitis)
Provide a brief overview of the pathophysiology of this condition.
Discuss common signs/symptoms and consider unique presentations of this condition.
Discuss how this condition is ultimately diagnosed.
Discuss how the patient will be managed in the emergency department or non-critical inpatient unit (Consider initial lab tests, medications, imaging, etc).
Discuss criteria for admission or discharge from the emergency department or non-critical inpatient unit
Discuss how this condition is managed in the inpatient (noncritical) setting (Include medications, diagnostics, consultation(s), and education, etc).
Discuss criteria for considering admission to the intensive care unit.
Discuss management strategies for intensive monitoring of this condition.
