THE DISCUSSION WAS:
Using your PICO question and the Shapiro Library, locate a relevant primary, peer-reviewed research article that would inform your question and attach a link to your initial post. Describe why this article qualifies as primary research. Then, choose one section, other than the abstract, assess the information it provides, and describe its potential to inform evidence-based practice.

BUT NOW WE HAVE TO:

In your responses, choose two peers and review their chosen articles. Describe why their articles meet the requirements for primary research and comment on their assessment of its potential to inform evidence-based practice. Did they miss anything? If the chosen peer article is not a primary research article, clarify the difference in primary research and the selected article.

THE PEER SAID:

PICO Question: Does decreased nurse staffing ratios increase adverse patient outcomes for laboring mothers?

The article I chose displays the important statistics of how critical the role of nursing is to a laboring mother. The shortage of nurses in the Labor and Delivery unit ultimately impacts the care of laboring mothers over physicians. “Nursing shortages are the biggest safety risk for patients in labor and delivery units, according to a recent survey of obstetricians. Just over 58% of the 1,130 respondents put nursing shortages ahead of physician support and backup (39.0%), inconsistent standards of care (38.5%), and nursing education (31.1%) as the most important challenge to patient safety, the Ob Hospitalist Group said in a new report” (Franki, 2015). Nurses who work in labor and delivery are crucial in ensuring the safety of both mother and baby during childbirth. They play a crucial role in preventing birth injuries, such as cerebral palsy resulting from inadequate oxygen during labor. It is crucial for nurses to maintain a constant watch on the progress of labor, especially the patterns of the baby’s heart rate. Some alterations and trends in the heart rate of the fetus can be worrisome as they may indicate a lack of adequate oxygen supply to the baby. A nurse must be able to identify those variations and trends and respond promptly to ensure the baby’s safety. The shortages in staffing of nurses affects the patient outcome for both mother and child ultimately putting them both at risk. Research indicates that having the right number of nurses on staff leads to better patient outcomes and higher levels of fulfillment for patients as well as nurses. Recognizing the importance of addressing nurse shortages is crucial for the well-being of our nurses, patients, and the overall health of our nation.
