Abstract

The quality of care we give our patients, and the level of safety are at risk due to professional practice difficulties in nursing. Lack of sufficient nurse staffing is a big issue in modern healthcare. Staff shortages in hospitals are caused by a combination of causes, one of which is the growing number of patients who need nursing care, and another is the increasing number of nurses who are getting close to retirement age. There is an overdemand for nurses, which is causing dangerous nurse-to-patient ratios. This, in turn, is raising worries about patient safety, increasing burnout rates, and placing high expectations on newly graduated nurses. This issue has been acknowledged on a national level within the healthcare sector. The number of registered nurses in the United States was 29 million in 2020, and according to reports, more than a million will be needed to meet the increasing demand (Haddad, 2023). PICO question used for the milestone: How can staffing and nurse retention be compared to hiring more nurses be improved to enhance patient outcomes by improving safety and quality while reducing morbidity and mortality? Six primary research articles using qualitative and quantitative research designs were analyzed by integrative review to determine solutions to the PICO question. The research used methods such as observations and questionnaires conducted by nurses and patients in acute care settings. The findings of these publications indicate that reducing nursing ratios leads to an upsurge in adverse patient outcomes, elevated patient death rates in cases of high nurse-patient ratios, and enhanced work satisfaction as well as better quality of care and safety when nurse-patient ratios are appropriate. The review was limited by modest survey sample sizes and a low number of participating hospitals. The findings of the publications indicate that there is a need to modify nurse-patient ratios in acute care settings to enhance patient outcomes.

Keywords: nursing ratio, inadequate nurse staffing, nurse retention, nursing shortage, patient safety
