NUR-440-H7349 Research & Evidence-Based Prac 24EW 6-1 Discussion: Qualitative Evaluations to peer #1

THE DISCUSSION WAS:

In quantitative research, we looked at the rate of falls numerically before and after the implementation of a program. In qualitative research, if you were interested in study the impact of falls on the patient’s quality of life, you could obtain this information through personal interviews. The unit of measurement would be the words that the patient uses, and a qualitative method would be used to analyze this data.

In your initial post, discuss the following:

1. Provide an example of qualitative research.
2. Identify which type of qualitative research is being used.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages to the design?
4. How does a study’s trustworthiness and rigor impact its potential to provide an evidence-based practice solution?

BUT NOW WE HAVE TO:

In your responses to peers, explain how mixed methods could strengthen qualitative research design.

THE PEER SAID:

Hello Class,

I chose to review “Nurses in the Lead: A Qualitative Study on the Development of

Distinct Nursing Roles in Daily Nursing Practice.”

The study’s purpose is to understand the nursing roles between different levels of

education through a developmental process that encompasses both experimental action and

critical appraisal.

This study used an ethnographic design. Within this design, different methods

were employed, including shadowing, observation, and participation. The researchers

shadowed the nurses in daily practice and observed and participated in meetings.

Ethnographic studies are a type of qualitative research method that involves the

detailed observation and description of a particular group, culture, or community in

its natural environment (Polit & Beck, 2021). Ethnography aims to provide an in-

depth understanding of the social, cultural, and behavioral dynamics within the

studied group.

Advantages:

Ethnographic studies provide a comprehensive understanding of a community or

group’s cultural context, social interactions, and behaviors. Another advantage is that

the researchers conduct their study in the participant’s natural environment, allowing

ethnographers to observe behaviors and interactions as they naturally occur rather

than relying on controlled settings (Black et al., 2021).

Disadvantages:

Ethnographic studies might require a lot of time and resources due to the

extensive nature of the fieldwork. Ethnographic studies can be costly because

researchers might need to spend months or even years collecting data. In addition,

ethnographic designs can be subjective and biased because the researcher’s

presence can influence the data collection.

Research studies that are rigorous and trustworthy are more likely to be valid and

reliable. If the study is valid and reliable, it will yield evidence-based practice

solutions, improving the quality of care and patient outcomes (Johnson et al, 2020).
