NUR-440-H7349 Research & Evidence-Based Prac 24EW 5-1 Discussion: Quantitative Evaluations to peer #1

THE DISCUSSION WAS:

Numerical data, measured in quantitative terms, reveals trends and patterns over time. For example, testing a new fall-prevention program within your hospital would require you to obtain a baseline fall rate before the program and then again after implementation of the program. Statistically, you could compare rate of falls before the new program with the rate of falls after the new program.

In your initial post, discuss the following:

1. Provide an example of quantitative research.
2. Identify which type of quantitative research design is being used.
3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the design?
4. How do statistical conclusions, validity, and reliability impact a study’s potential to provide an evidence-based practice solution?

BUT NOW WE HAVE TO:

In response to two of your peers, identify potential threats to the validity of the research example. If the study can still be considered valid, how might the results be used to change nursing practice?

THE PEER SAID:

In this article, the type of quantitative research was based on a study of nursing during the Covid-19 pandemic. The study looked at the correlation between stress and job satisfaction amongst those who were on the frontline. This study was conducted in the Middle East (Sharif et al. 2023). With a combination of both physical and physiological effects, nurses were found to be the most affected, especially with concerns about job satisfaction (Del Carmen Giménez‐Espert et al., 2020). The questions were asked by an online survey. All participants were Registered Nurses who worked between February and April of 2021. Head nurses of different units were asked to choose nurses from their units who agreed to participate and send them the link to the study. 625 nurses responded to the survey out of 1,225 nurses (Sharif et al., 2023). The data was analyzed using both descriptive and variation analyses. The survey consisted of 122 items in the English language and took approximately 35 minutes to complete (Sharif et al., 2023). Four sections included demographics, the expanded nursing stress scale, the depression, anxiety, and stress scale, and a job satisfaction survey. The advantage of this method is the time to participate in the survey and the unknown identities of those participating. The disadvantage to this is that it was given in one language, and one would not know if a participant was a Native English speaker. Although the survey was anonymous to a certain extent, it could be perceived as being uncontrolled. Meaning there are no equal groups of males to females, or demographical backgrounds, or even age. These can all affect the data of the survey. Statistical conclusions can impact one’s solution due to the conflicts within the results which can be due to small sample sizes or the use of indifferent groups. Validity can impact a solution due to the concerns that a different group may influence the results. If any of these are in question, then it can be a threat to an evidence-based practice solution.
