Understanding cultural differences through learning about other cultures is important. In order to provide culturally competent care, one must asses their own bias, understand when others culture is in contrast to their own and have a plan for how to offer the best possible acre to each client on their own cultural playing field.
Blacks (10 points) Prior to this class, and having discussion/reading your text, what did you think of when you hear the term Black, or Black American? Have these ideas changed? Describe your thoughts in detail and discuss – How does this differ from the use of African American?
Native Americans (10 points) When you hear the term Native American, what image comes to mind? As there are many tribes, and distinct tribal traditions within this group, select a tribe and describe the following: a. Traditions surrounding birth b. Traditions surrounding death c. Views on health and illness
Latino/Hispanic (5 points) Explore the origin of these terms, and detail your findings. Where did these terms come from, and why do some resent use of the term Hispanic.
Traditional Chinese Custom (10 points) A recent immigrant from China has just given birth. While offering patient education at discharge, you tell her to drink plenty of ice water, dress in light, loose clothing, and get some fresh air. Why is this advice the woman might ignore? Southeast Indian (10 points) A male, Southeast Indian patient arrives in the ED after a motor vehicle accident. He has a beard, cloth strings around his wrist, and is wearing a turban. He is unconscious. In order to offer timely and appropriate care in an emergent situation, The ER staff will need to remove the patient’s clothes and turban to check for injuries. What precautions should be taken to avoid conflict and honor the patient’s religious beliefs? Be specific in your answer
Buddhism (10 points) An elderly Buddhist patient is in pain and taking a turn for the worse. Healthcare workers want to intubate and transfer the patient to the busy ICU for closer monitoring. Why would the patient or family object to this?
Law (10 points) Nurses are mandated reporters and must report signs of suspected abuse. The after effects of several traditional Asian medical treatments might lead you to suspect abuse. List two treatments which result in a situation in which you might be suspicious of abuse. Be specific and detailed in your answer
Spiritual/supernatural/natural forces (10 points) Many cultures differ in their beliefs and practices surrounding the cause of illness. Some believe that supernatural forces are at work, that illness derives from an unbalanced life or illness is a curse from the god of their understanding. Describe your views on the cause of disease being supernatural/spiritual and how you would care for someone who had a belief other than yours.
Communication (10 points) In a diverse society we encounter multiple cultures within our healthcare system Detail THREE ways (other than use a translator) to overcome communication barriers with someone from a culture other than yours.
Cultural Sensitivity (10 points) Describe in detail, how you approach working with a client of another culture, who may have beliefs you do not agree with. What resources can you use, where can you find support, and how are you going to avoid cultural conflict?
