NRS 429 GCU Changing Definitions of Health Throughout History Discussion – Description
Reply:
Definition of what is considered health changed over centuries, ancient cultures and again in medieval times people believed that the illness was brought by demons and that prayers and sacrifices are necessary for healing. Hippocrates, in fifth century BC, came with the revolutionary idea that the health means a balance between four bodily fluids and imbalance means an illness. As society’s understanding evolved together with advances in medical world and discoveries in science, many other health definitions were developed, as being free from illness. However, in modern times a new health definition was needed. In 1948 WHO considered health as state of physical, social and mental well-being, and not just being free from illness. This however, was considered later on as too ambitious and unachievable because of the social determinants of health and different level of healthcare around the world. It is important that the health is seen as variable, state of well-being when patient’s needs are being met, as state of physical, mental, emotional, and social wellness (NCBI, n.d)
Nurses play important part in patient’s health promotion, as they are empowering patient in living healthier lifestyle, which would prevent future chronic disease or illness and injuries. Nurses have to assess patient’s specific medical needs, living circumstances, social situation to develop a nursing plan that is evidence based to achieve the best health outcomes for the specific patient. Evidence based practice is a standard way in nursing and nurses have to be aware, by continuous education, about current nursing interventions and medical care. Implementing evidence-based practice is the best for clinical outcomes, it lowers the cost of healthcare, and it enhances nurses’ knowledge and clinical expertise. (GCU, 2022.)
