This assignment allows students to examine the relationship between social work practice, HBSE concepts and mesosystems (peer-family-school-neighborhood) contexts. The paper will explore the role of mesosystem factors play in influencing individual and group functioning by applying theories of identity development, family systems theory, group and organizational theories covered to date in this course.
In this assignment, you will be provided a case from your instructor and will write a critical analysis/reflection that consists of approximately 6-7 typed, double-spaced, pages (excluding title and reference page). You will need to address the following set of questions in your paper and you will provide supporting evidence from the provided case along with appropriate references (1-2 references required) to the corresponding course readings. TOTAL: 120 points
Examination: Discuss the primary issues/concerns in the case provided.
Give a general summary of the issues/concerns in the case
Define the community you are exploring (what type of community, and who are the members)
List 2 community assets.
Application: Using specific examples, describe how the selected topic portrays at least two key HBSE concepts (e.g., traditional and alternative paradigms related to diversity, systems of oppression, privilege, culture, life stages, and intersectionality including the variables of race/ethnic identity development, gender and sexuality, and socioeconomic class) that are relevant within meso-level systems.
Critical Thinking: Discuss the ways in which meso-level factors influence human behavior, both individual behavior and group/community behaviors.
Define at least two environmental influences that are influencing human behavior in the story.
Identify at least 3 risk and 3 protective factors within the community (remember that you are looking at the community as a whole as your primary client, not individuals).
Include discussion of at least one appropriate theory covered in the course.
Potential theories to discuss include: empowerment theory, human relations theories, theory Y, systems theory, contingency theory, life cycle theory, community building, asset based community development, ecological theory, conflict theory
Synthesis/Reflection: Discuss the implications of meso-level factors on the larger community, and the role of social workers in addressing its impact.
