MU Redesign a Bad Website Project – Description

For this assignment, you will need to redesign a website with a bad layout. You will need to find a webpage from the following types of businesses: Lawyers, roller skating rinks, local restaurants, local bakeries, local car sales, local retail, local plumbers, electricians, roofing, etc. Quite often these are great places to find a poorly designed website and do a “Redesign” of the website using a free website design tool. Local websites tend to have fewer resources, so the designs are far less polished and can be easily improved. No other websites will be allowed to be used for this project.

Assignment Instructions

Post a screenshot of the bad website’s home page, and copy a link to the site to the Rough Draft: Redesign a Bad Website Doc.
Describe why the website is poorly designed using the principles in Module 1. Choose a really bad site, these are much easier to redesign and to describe.
Design: The redesign does not need to be a working/published final product, but it should address problems with the webpage and ways that it could be corrected. You can print out the website page and draw on the page, cut and paste and move around, then rescan if necessary. Be sure to post the original website image and your re-designed version. Using free website apps is the best way to redesign. Weebly, WordPress, Behance, and Wix are all free, easy-to-use website design sites.
Use at least 3-6 principles/ strategies from the readings that you are using to critique and are using to improve the design. 3 is the least number expected, and 6 is the exceptional use of the principles.
The written component should address the problems and solutions with the design of the website. What things could be altered to improve the website? What principles/strategies you are using to effectively redesign the site?
Don’t forget to also describe how your redesign has used the principles you have learned about. Be sure to identify the principle by full name, and describe the how and why behind its use. Tell me WHY it is effective.

Example:
This website lacks an effective Hierarchy. Highlighting has been overused, creating too many focal points. Uniform Connectedness has been used in some areas but could be stronger. Alignment of elements has been used, but not enough for clear navigation. Recommend using Progressive Disclosure to hide more of the text and simplifying the amount of information on the main page to not overwhelm the viewer.

WEBSITES THAT HAVE BEEN OVERUSED AND ARE OFF-LIMITS: Do not use any of these sites:

Penny Juice
LingCars.com
Yvettes Fashions
Arngren.net
Buystockswithus.com
Yale Art School

Common Errors and Warnings

Bad website and Redesign: Don’t forget to upload both an image of the original home page and your redesign using a free website generator.
Use Website Apps: Use free website generators to help you design, they are free and easy to use. Weebly, Wix, and WordPress are just some of the many applications that make this easy!
Describe: Describe and introduce the reader to your subject matter. Who is the website for? What are they providing a service for? WHY is the website not working well? Be specific and use your terms to describe. Does it lack legibility, WHY? Is it confusing due to Horror Vacui? How are the elements of the design interfering with navigation? Provide the reader with your main thesis as to the main issues, then break it down using principles!
Do not start your writing with: “This website”. What website? You have not introduced the reader to anything, don’t try and point your reader to aspects of the design before ever introducing the details!
Writing: Use your principles in every section of your writing. The aim of every assignment is to show your comprehension of the principles.
