MLA FORMAT
In this essay you will introduce, 1 at a time, 2 of the perspectives you mentioned in the
introduction–this means 2 opposing positions held by the 2 scholars you will focus on. You
will explain the 1st position, describe it, define it, then discuss what 2 scholars say about it.
Throughout your discussion, give your analysis (opinion) about what they say.
Your purpose is to analyze each author’s main points of disagreement and to probe
the ideas, beliefs, values, and concerns that underlie their disagreement. WHY do
they disagree? What leads to this disagreement?
Then you will present the opposing position and discuss what those 2 scholars say. In this
part of the discussion, you will demonstrate an awareness of how these 2 sources differ from the
first 2 sources. You will also analyze what they say and then give your opinion about their
positions

First 2 SOURCES Kiss, Jamie. “Gun violence and mental illness.” The Lancet Psychiatry 1.5 2014: 335–336. https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanpsy/article/PIIS2215-0366(14)70382-7/fulltext

Decide which position to begin with. Describe it in detail and define that position
• Introduce the first author and the article/book/source they wrote and tell the reader what that author’s
argument is (be objective, summarize accurately, use at least 1 quote). Summaries
of source positions should be precise (8-12+sentences each)
• Comment on what that author says–give your analysis, i.e., your opinion,
about their ideas–throughout the summary. Every time you summarize an idea
from your source, you must then comment on it. (page 177)
Begin 2nd position discussion:
• NEXT–introduce the OPPOSING side. What is this position? Describe it in
detail and define that position and state clearly HOW it is opposed to the First position your first author’s hold.
• Introduce the Second author and the article/book/source they wrote (use the
proper introduction sentence) and tell the reader what that author’s
argument is (be objective, summarize accurately, use at least 1 quote)
• Comment on what that author says–give your analysis, i.e., your opinion, about
their ideas–throughout the summary. Every time you summarize one of their
points, you comment on it—and you Compare/Contrast that idea with the first
scholar. You “participate in the debate” between these 2 people Conclusion:
• Finally, analyze WHY these scholars differ. What is the common ground they all
agree on, and then sum up the parts that they disagree on? Analyze what is within each position that you think is VALID, and then what you think is wrong with that position. Next, give a couple lead-in sentences that move towards YOUR thesis, which should be the last sentence of this part
