Mindfulness-based Stress Reduction Discussion Paper

As a PMHNP I would definitely consider integrating Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) into my practice. MBSR techniques, involving mindfulness meditation and awareness, have shown benefits in reducing stress and improving mental well-being (Haller et al., 2021). I would incorporate it because of additional benefits such as increased ability in my patient to manage anxiety and depression, improvement in self-care, decreasing negative thoughts and habits, increase in self-awareness, improved sense of wellbeing and the patient would develop a deeper connection with themselves. While I would adhere to evidence-based practices, incorporating complementary approaches like MBSR could enhance holistic care, fostering self-awareness and coping skills in patients. I find it essential to assess individual needs and preferences, maintaining an open-minded and patient-centred approach to promote comprehensive mental health care. A challenge with implementing MBSR would be patient engagement, where, some patients would find it challenging to commit to the regular practice (Bermpohl et al., 2023). Sitting still and being present and mindful can be challenging particularly for individuals with racing thoughts. I also believe it may be a challenge implementing MBSR because of time commitments among clients. The practice can be time-intensive, making it a barrier for some. However, with time, and upon experiencing the benefits of the practice, I am hopeful some clients would dedicate more time, intentionally, to the practice.

I believe its application as a monotherapy or as adjunctive therapy is contingent upon the individual’s psychological difficulties. It is highly effective for mild to moderate stress levels, or low anxiety and depression. However, MBSR is ideal as an adjunctive intervention for more complex cases of anxiety and depression. In combination with CBT techniques, MBSR would be an effective approach considering it also reinforces the practice of changing thinking patterns from maladaptive patterns to healthier and realistic thoughts (Bermpohl et al., 2023).
